BP, Anadarko responsible for oil spill penalties in Supreme Court ruling

The Supreme Court has upheld a 2014 ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that held BP and Anadarko Petroleum liable for civil penalties following the largest oil spill in U.S. history at the Deepwater Horizon rig in 2010. The companies had attempted to avoid fines as high as $13.7 billion for BP and more than $1 billion for Anadarko, as established by the Clean Water Act.
