Report: Illinois police officer whose shooting death sparked huge manhunt killed himself

On Sept. 1, the town of Fox Lake, Illinois, was put on lockdown as law enforcement officers from Lake County and beyond searched for the three people believed to have killed Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, a veteran officer found shot dead 150 feet from his squad car after reporting that he was pursuing three "suspicious subjects." The Lake County Sheriff's Office has called a news conference for Wednesday to announce the "conclusive results" of its investigation, and that finding, an "official briefed on the investigation" tells The Associated Press, is that Gliniewicz killed himself.

In October, investigators said that Gliniewicz, referred to affectionately as G.I. Joe, had been struck by two rounds from his own gun, one of which pierced his upper chest. No one was ever arrested in the case, though the massive manhunt lasted for weeks. Gliniewicz, 52, was married and had four children.
