At least 14 dead, 17 wounded in San Bernardino shooting; 2 suspects dead
Two of the suspects in a deadly mass shooting that killed at least 14 people Wednesday in San Bernardino, California, are dead after a gun battle with police.
The suspects have been identified as Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27. Police said there are reports that the two were in a relationship, and Farook was a five-year employee of San Bernardino County. Officers spotted a dark SUV matching the description of the suspected shooters' vehicle in the nearby city of Redlands Wednesday at around 3 p.m., and a pursuit began. The chase ended in San Bernardino, south of the San Bernardino International Airport and north of Interstate 10, and gunfire erupted. Witnesses said they heard "thousands" of rounds of gunfire, and a person seen running from the area has been detained; San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said police did not know if he was a suspect or at the wrong place at the wrong time. Burguan said the suspects were both armed with assault rifles and handguns, and wearing tactical gear, when they were killed.
The shooting at the Inland Regional Center started at about 11 a.m., targeting a holiday party for the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, and left at least 14 people dead and 17 wounded, according to police officials. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, although a federal law enforcement official told the Los Angeles Times investigators believe it stemmed from an argument at the party. The shooting took place in a conference room at the Inland Regional Center, which serves developmentally disabled children and adults in the community. "These were people who came prepared," Burguan said, adding that the attackers were believed to have used "long guns," not handguns. No weapons were recovered at the scene.
