Early Monday, North Korea fired four or five projectiles into the waters off its east coast, according to South Korean defense officials and the Yonhap News Agency. The unidentified projectiles flew about 120 miles, starting in the northeastern city of Hamhung, and appear to be Pyongyang's response to annual joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises. This year's spring military drills, the largest yet, are taking place amid heightened tensions after North Korea tested a nuclear device, sparking new United Nations sanctions. On Friday, Pyongyang fired its first medium-range missile since 2014 into the sea, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered new warhead and long-range ballistic missile tests. The U.S. and South Korea say they are monitoring the situation.
