American League wins MLB All-Star game, 4-2
Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez of the reigning World Series champs the Kansas City Royals put the American League All-Star team ahead with two homers in the second inning in San Diego on Tuesday night, and the AL kept the lead, beating the National League team 4-2, securing home-field advantage for whichever AL team makes it to this year's World Series. It was the fourth straight All-Star Game win for the American League, and Hosmer was named MVP, after adding an RBI single to his home run.
The NL was the first on the scoreboard, thanks to a homer from Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs in the first inning. But a rally at the top of the eighth fizzled, and a double-play at the top of the ninth ended the game. Boston Red Sox star slugger David Ortiz made his 10th and final All-Star appearance, and after he drew a walk in the third inning, his AL teammates swarmed the field for a warm send-off. Ortiz, 40, is retiring at the end of this season. "Things are getting harder," he said after the game. "As you get older, it gets a little difficult."
