Voters already know who they want to run in 2020

We're still 32 days away from Election Day 2016, but voters are already thinking about 2020. A Politico/Morning Consult poll released Friday revealed that sizeable portions of Republicans and Democrats alike already have a candidate in mind that they'd like to see run for president next if their candidate loses this time around.

For Democrats, the top choice is Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.): If Hillary Clinton doesn't clinch a victory on Nov. 8, 28 percent said they'd like to see Warren atop the ticket in 2020. Another 16 percent said vice presidential candidate Sen. Tim Kaine (Va.) would be their pick, while 9 percent said Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.) and 8 percent said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Thirty-two percent said they didn't know who they'd root for, while 8 percent chose "other."

Among Republicans, the clear favorite was vice presidential candidate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, with 22 percent. Meanwhile, 13 percent wanted Donald Trump to run again in 2020, 13 percent chose House Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.), 12 percent chose Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), 11 percent chose Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), 7 percent chose Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and a slim 1 percent chose Sen. Tom Cotton (Ark.). Only 17 percent of Republicans said they didn't know who they'd like to top their ticket in the next presidential election, and just 4 percent chose "other."

As for this election, voters seem to have pretty much made up their minds: A whopping 84 percent said the vice presidential debate Tuesday night did nothing to sway their vote.

The poll was conducted online from Oct. 5-6 among 1,989 registered voters across the nation. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
