If Hillary Clinton wins the election on Tuesday night, she won't be starting things off with a bang. New York Police Department officials told Politico that the fireworks her campaign had planned to set off from a barge on the Hudson River — near her planned election night event at the Javits Center in New York City — have been canceled and no permit has been issued for them.
It's unclear exactly why the fireworks have been nixed. The news comes amid reports that the NYPD will be on high alert on Election Day, especially with Clinton and her rival Donald Trump holding their election night events within a mile of each other in Manhattan. More than 5,000 uniformed officers will be working to make sure things run smoothly across the city.
"It is our sacred obligation to protect that process, to make sure that democracy unfolds as it's meant to be," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said. That process just doesn't apparently include pyrotechnics.
