John McCain wins re-election to the Senate

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the 2008 Republican nominee for president, has won re-election over Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick.
With 55 percent of the state reporting, McCain has 53 percent of the vote to Kirkpatrick's 42 percent. He has been projected the winner by CBS News and NBC News.
McCain announced this past October that he would not vote for Donald Trump for president, following the release of a 2005 videotape in which the Republican nominee for president boasted of sexually assaulting women.

Trump famously insulted McCain early during the presidential primary season, when he declared: "He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."
McCain's former running mate when he ran for president, Sarah Palin, later endorsed Trump for the Republican nomination.
