Disney unveils a spoonful of new footage from Mary Poppins Returns with first full trailer

Disney has just unveiled the infectiously charming first full trailer for its highly-anticipated new musical, Mary Poppins Returns.
After a fairly vague initial teaser in March, the new clip shows off more of film's plot, which involves Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) coming back decades after the original movie in order to help a grown-up Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer). Tragedy has befallen the family after the death of Michael's wife — until the singing and dancing nanny from their childhood returns to restore some much-needed magic.
The new trailer teases some of the film's musical sequences, with Blunt seen singing to the children and later dancing with Lin Manuel-Miranda, who plays a street lamplighter named Jack, per Empire. Mary Poppins Returns will combine live-action elements with 2-D animation, just like the original film did over 50 years ago.

If you were wondering whether there might be room for Dick Van Dyke to return, wonder no longer, as the 92-year-old actor has a brief cameo in this trailer. Julie Andrews, the original Mary Poppins, was also reportedly offered a cameo role but turned it down, per Entertainment Weekly.
Mary Poppins Returns is directed by Rob Marshall, who has previously helmed acclaimed musical films like Chicago and Into the Woods. It hits theaters Dec. 19. You can watch the full trailer below. Brendan Morrow
