Hulu steals Netflix's thunder with surprise Fyre Festival documentary drop

The streaming wars between Hulu and Netflix have just escalated.

Hulu released Fyre Fraud, its new documentary about the infamous 2017 Fyre Festival, without warning Monday. This film had previously been announced but never had a release date set.

The timing of the drop is particularly noteworthy because it comes just days before Netflix is scheduled to release a Fyre Festival documentary of its own called Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. Netflix had set the Jan. 18 release date back in December, so Hulu is clearly trying to undercut the competition.

The 2017 musical festival that both of these documentaries focus on turned out to be such a complete disaster that its organizers were slapped with lawsuits and Fyre Media's founder, Billy McFarland, was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud. Hulu's Fyre Fraud features an interview with McFarland, which the streaming service touts as an exclusive, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Netflix has not responded to the shots fired by Hulu on Monday, but needless to say, they probably won't be promoting any of their competitor's content again soon.
