2020 GOP challenger Bill Weld says Trump 'would prefer an Aryan nation'

Bill Weld is pulling no punches on his longshot bid for the presidency.

The former Massachusetts governor and Republican 2020 candidate launched a scathing accusation at President Trump last week, saying "it seems he would prefer an Aryan nation." Those comments certainly weren't made in a moment of passion or anger, seeing as Weld's words were part of a prepared statement, and that he doubled down on them again Tuesday night, The Boston Globe reports.

Weld made his initial comments during a Q&A at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute on May 21, saying that he "celebrate[s] that America has always been a melting pot," the Globe recounts. Trump, on the other hand, is "very interested in bloodlines," Weld continued. CNN's Don Lemon brought up the comments again on Tuesday night, and when he asked Weld to clarify them, the primary challenger declared that he meant Trump wanted "a nation with no immigrants whatsoever."

Weld is so far the only Republican to mount a primary challenge to Trump. He previously ran on the 2016 libertarian ticket as Gary Johnson's running mate, but has yet to crack a major presence on any GOP primary polls.
