The mystery of Sutton Hoo's Bromeswell Bucket – a broken copper alloy tub that was buried at the site in Suffolk 1,300 years ago – has been solved. Decorated with images of naked warriors and leaping lions, the Byzantine bucket carries an inscription in Greek: "Use this in good health, Master Count, for many happy years." It was presumed to have been a prized possession, but it was not clear why it was buried. Now, though, its base has been excavated – which has revealed that it was used to hold the cremated remains of a VIP.
