President Donald Trump gets a lot of his political support from farm country. But those who put food on our tables are worried that his policies, from tariffs to funding freezes, will make it harder for them to do their jobs. 

The prospect of a Trump-created trade war has farmers "on edge," said The Washington Post. One Iowa farm family said tariffs will drive up the costs of Chinese-made herbicides and tractors they use and will likely cut off the markets for soybeans (China) and corn (Mexico). 

It's a "fresh element of worry" as the nation's farmers deal with an "unforgiving business environment," said the Post. And beyond tariffs, the "rapid-fire array of directives" from the Trump administration has also "paused federal funding on a range of programs and grants" that benefit farmers, said The New York Times.

What did the commentators say?
Farmers have been "played for suckers" by Trump, said Ben Palen, a fifth-generation farmer, at the Kansas Reflector. Farmers supported Trump because he "promised less regulation and greater prosperity" in the agriculture sector. Instead, the "only constant is chaos." 

But Trump won't pay the price for the uncertainty he has created. Instead, the pain will be felt by "farmers, small towns and Main Street businesses" in the rural red states that gave him their votes, said Palen. The resulting "economic and social consequences could be unprecedented."

"Every consumer feels it at the grocery store" when farmers feel pain, said Rob Larew, the president of the National Farmers Union, at MSNBC. Farmers take on an "immense amount of financial risk" to plant crops and raise livestock when all that work could be wiped out by bad weather or a turn in the financial markets. 

The programs Trump has frozen have traditionally helped those farmers "stay afloat when times get tough," said Larew. The new administration has added "more uncertainty to a stressed farm economy."

What next?
American farmers are "struggling to make critical decisions ahead of the spring thaw," said NBC News. The funding freeze comes at a crucial moment in the "seasonal cycle of many farms." Nature keeps moving even if the federal government does not. The delays in federal funding "might not seem like a big deal for someone who's not a farmer," said Ang Roell, a farmer and beekeeper in Massachusetts. "But it actually is."

Subconscious bias is common in medicine because doctors and other health staff are humans prone to such errors. And cognitive bias is not necessarily caused by negative intentions — it occurs based on a medical professional's experience and observations. Even so, it can lead to issues in diagnosis and treatment. Some health care workers are looking to AI to help eliminate bias in the diagnostic process, but the technology may not be free from bias itself.

Can bias be reduced?
"Simply increasing physicians' familiarity with the many types" of cognitive bias, including confirmation bias and availability bias, and "how to avoid them may be one of the best strategies to decrease bias-related errors," said the AMA Journal of Ethics. So education in medical schools about bias could lead to a decrease. "The practice of reflection reinforces behaviors that reduce bias in complex situations." However, in high-stress situations, it's more difficult to recognize skewed perceptions. 

What can AI do?
Some experts are hopeful about the diagnostic capabilities of AI. "Future generations of generative AI, pretrained with data from people's electronic health records and fed with information" about cognitive bias, will be able to "spot these types of errors when they occur," said Forbes. While there's potential, bias can easily make its way into the models. 

Generative AI models "display human-like cognitive biases," said a study in the New England Journal of Medicine AI, and the "magnitude of bias can be larger than observed in practicing clinicians." They may be "particularly prone to biases in medicine," said study co-author Dr. Donald Redelmeier, because it's an area where "uncertainty and complexity are widespread." With further advancements, safeguards against cognitive bias could be created.

The other concern is that AI has shown more than just cognitive bias. AI models, especially those in health and medicine, have also displayed gender and racial bias because the medical data used to train it has largely excluded women and people of color. "When we talk about 'bias in AI,' we must remember that computers learn from us," said Michael Choma, an associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine. Bias is a "human problem."
