Good Day, Bad Day

Power and money, newsroom morale

GOOD DAY FOR: Power and money, as the average paycheck at the local power company has risen 4.8 percent annually over the past three years, while real pay is falling for most other U.S. workers. Wages in power generation and supply now average $1,300 a week, about twice the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. (The Wall Street Journal)

BAD DAY FOR: Newsroom morale, after McClatchy, the No. 3 U.S. newspaper company, announced 1,400 job cuts, or about 10 percent of its work force. The publisher, whose papers include The Miami Herald and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, also reported a 14.5 slump in ad revenues for the first five months of the year. (AP in Yahoo! Finance)
