Inside look at McLaren's P1 GTR Workshop

Manufacturer reveals pictures of the £2m supercars that never go home with their owners

McLaren has given a tantalising glimpse into its "Workshop of Wonders" – its private P1 GTR facility built especially for keeping and maintaining the exclusive hypercars for their owners.

A series of images give fans a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the site and 12 GTRs, each with a value of £2m. In total, the photo album "equates to 11,832bhp, over £24 million and a full-on acid trip of paintjobs", says Top Gear.

The track-only vehicle uses a 3.8-litre twin turbocharged hybrid V8 similar to the one used in the road car but with the wick turned up to 986bhp, some 330lbs shed from its weight and all the racing-car trimmings, such as a huge rear wing and other aerodynamic appendages.

McLaren built the P1 GTR not just as an opportunity to offer customers and current owners something a bit more hardcore and exclusive, but also to mark the 20 years since it won Le Mans with an F1 GTR in 1995. Many of those "acid-trip" paint jobs are tribute liveries to the cars that competed in the mid and late-1990s.

The "Driver Programme" which comes with the car includes owners being offered a bespoke livery as well as custom-made racing suits and helmets and a proper seat fitting. Each GTR owner is also invited to six McLaren-hosted events at various circuits around the world each year.

Designed for the wealthiest and most prominent customers, hypercar programmes offering all the racing driver trimmings, including fitness trainers and driver coaching no less, are becoming fixtures within the stables of supercar manufacturers. Ferrari offers a similar service with its FXXK and hyper-exclusive "Corse Clienti" programme for its ex-F1 cars. Aston Martin recently ventured into the fray, too.

Thirty P1 GTRs have already been sold and, says Evo, McLaren plans a run of about 40 – to be offered for sale to the 375 customers who have already stumped up £866,000 for a standard P1.
