Tesla has released an update for its electric Model S saloon and Model X SUV that has improved their performance figures, reports AutoExpress.

The upgrade is believed to apply to the "hardware underpinning both cars", the magazine says, which means the enhanced "performance figures will apply only to brand new models being manufactured right now".

It adds that older Model S and X cars "won’t receive a software update unlocking the extra shove".

The upgrade lowers the entry-level Model S 75 and 75D's acceleration figures by 1.3sec and 1sec respectively, says Evo. Therefore, the revised 0-60mph figures come in at 4.2sec and 4sec.

Range-topping 100D models get a 0.1sec acceleration boost, adds the mag, bringing its 0-60mph time to 4.1sec.

Model X SUVs also get a jump in performance, as Evo says the entry-level 75D variant will now go from 0-60mph in 4.9sec - 1.1sec faster than before.

Tesla has also "changed the parts number of its main rear-wheel drive motor", says Electrek, suggesting the hardware itself has been upgraded.

The company has "introduced several improvements to its battery pack, inverter, and electric motors" over the last few years, which the site says may bring it closer to its target of having powertrains that last for more than a million miles.

Meanwhile, Tesla founder Elon Musk revealed earlier this week that the company's first entry-level Model 3 saloon will roll off the production line on Friday.

A tweet from the South African-born inventor added that a "handover party" for the first 30 Model 3 owners will be held on 28 July.
