Granted, this edition “won’t make anyone weak-kneed at first sight.” But part of the fun of the WRX has always been the way it packs serious performance under “mundane sheet metal.” The new direct-injected four-cylinder is “only a tad more butch” than the engine it replaces, but the car turns out to be “exponentially more capable when the road twists.” Credit tighter steering, a stiffened chassis, and a very well-tuned suspension.

It’s “super sad” that Subaru is discontinuing the hatchback model, and inside the four-door’s cabin, “there isn’t anything to really rave about.” We’re pleased about the added sixth gear on the manual transmission, though, and the optional automatic is “surprisingly good.” Say what you want about its appearance. “As far as street-legal rally cars go, there’s still nothing better than a WRX.”
