Sagrantino: A fall favorite
The deep flavor of sagrantino wine plays well with fall comfort foods.
Come fall, my mind turns to full-bodied reds, and sagrantinos fit the bill nicely, said Dan Radil in the Bellingham, Wash., Herald. These “super-inky, super-tannic” wines are produced in Italy’s Umbria region and rank “among the most muscular wines I’ve ever tried.” But given time to aerate, their deep flavors play well with fall comfort foods.
2007 Tenuta Castelbuono Sagrantino di Montefalco ($37). “Incredible blueberry aromatics” float above “an underlying layer of sweet plum” in this “grippy” sagrantino.
2007 Scacciadiavoli Sagrantino di Montefalco ($39). This “blockbuster” sagrantino delivers dark fruit flavors and “a slightly spicy finish.”

2007 Collepiano Sagrantino di Montefalco ($59). Great with a juicy, marbled steak, this wine offers a complex blend of dried plum and berry flavors.
