Best apps for taming a Web addiction
MacFreedom.com, SelfControlApp.com, and more
MacFreedom.com offers an app for Macs or PCs that lets you block the machines’ access to the Internet for a specified amount of time. You’ll surely waste less time when the block is on; “if you chicken out, you can reboot your computer and the block is canceled.” ($10)
SelfControlApp.com grants self-control to those who have none. Its Web-based app blocks email and specific Web pages for a preselected amount of time and won’t let you change your mind.
www.MindfulBrowsing.com provides a less draconian fix. Like similar apps for Firefox and Chrome, Mindful Browsing lets Safari users select websites they want to avoid and displays a warning page anytime they try to return to one. Each warning can be dismissed, but “it makes you stop and think before you start wasting time.”
