Charity of the week: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
The Foundation is dedicated to accelerating the search for a cure for Parkinson’s disease and to improving treatment for people who live with the condition.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MichaelJFox.org) is dedicated to accelerating the search for a cure for Parkinson’s disease and to improving treatment for the 5 million people worldwide living with the condition today. Current medications are not capable of halting or slowing the progression of Parkinson’s; they only provide limited symptomatic relief and can cause numerous debilitating side effects. Since its formation in 2000 by the actor Michael J. Fox, who had gone public with his Parkinson’s two years earlier, the Foundation has funded more than $325 million in research and run more than 60 clinical trials in pursuit of a cure and better treatment. It has registered more than 15,000 people as potential participants in trials to test Parkinson’s therapies.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
