Kerry to be nominated for secretary of state

President Obama is expected to nominate Sen. John Kerry to succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.

President Obama is expected to nominate Sen. John Kerry to succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, administration officials said this week. Kerry, a long-serving Democratic senator from Massachusetts, was the president’s second choice for the position after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew from consideration because of GOP resistance. White House officials hailed Kerry’s international experience, his missions to Afghanistan and other hot spots in the past four years, and his expected confirmation by Senate colleagues. “He’s creative on foreign policy issues,” said a former administration official. “He’s somebody who wants to solve problems and is prepared to take some risks to do so.”
