1. The triumphant return of the Olive Garden critic
Marilyn Hagerty, a food writer for the Grand Forks Herald in North Dakota, became the toast of the internet this past March after she published a warm, implausibly earnest review of a local Olive Garden. This week Ad Age asked the 85-year-old veteran for her thoughts on a similarly viral, scathing New York Times review of Food Network star Guy Fieri's new Times Square mega-eatery penned by restaurant critic Pete Wells. Writes Hagerty:
I wondered why a person would want to write a negative piece like that. What is the point? I try to give my readers an idea of what the restaurant is like, its signature items ... I like to describe the place and give a feel of being there ... My readers like to know what it costs ... I try to present some pluses and minuses. I guess I don't understand the reason for writing a completely negative piece. Why bother?
