Charity of the week: American Bird Conservancy
Since 1994, the organization has worked to prevent the extinction of the rarest and most vulnerable populations of birds.
The mission of the American Bird Conservancy (abcbirds.org) is to protect native birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Since 1994, the organization has worked to prevent the extinction of the rarest and most vulnerable populations, conserve and restore critical breeding grounds and stopovers for migrating birds, and raise awareness about threats including pesticide poisonings, invasive species, and wind turbines in flyways. A key effort is focused on reversing the devastation that commercial long-line fisheries have on seabirds, one of the most endangered bird groups in the world. ABC has also developed a network of more than 40 biodiversity reserves with partners in a dozen countries throughout Latin America.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
