Pizza: Even Mississippi wants to be Brooklyn

One of Mississippi's new pizza hot spots took second prize in 2010's American Pizza Championship.

Other than Hawaii, no state has fewer pizza outlets per capita than Mississippi. But changing times mean you can find a great pie in the Magnolia State if you know where to look, said Rachel Heise Bolten in Serious Eats. Below are three of the best, led by a new spot that recently took second prize in a national showdown.

TriBecca Allie Café Sardis. This pizza café outside Oxford is the creation of transplanted New Yorkers and home to the runner-up in 2010’s American Pizza Championship. The Neapolitan-style Rosa Magnolia, cooked in a wood-fired oven, is topped with red onion, mozzarella, and local pecans. 216 S. Main St., (662) 487-2233

Sal and Mookie’s New York Pizza & Ice Cream Joint Jackson. If there is a consensus choice for best pizza place in the state, this old-timer is it. Try Sal and Mookie’s 4 Train, which is topped with chipotle BBQ sauce, sharp cheddar, and roasted pork loin. 565 Taylor St., (601) 368-1919
