Trees, Water & People helps communities protect, conserve, and manage their natural resources. In Central America, TWP (treeswaterpeople.org) distributes fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves in poor communities where other energy sources are unavailable or unaffordable. The stoves use up to 70 percent less wood than traditional open-fire stoves, reducing deforestation and cutting fuel costs—a significant benefit in areas where family incomes often average less than $100 a month. In TWP’s own community, in Larimer County, Colo., volunteers have planted more than 5,000 trees. TWP also organizes reforestation campaigns in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Haiti. The fruit and nut trees planted both protect the environment and boost the economy by providing a cash crop.
Each charity highlighted on this page has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of charities in America. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on their financial strength, the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
