Show of the week: The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway
Paul Reubens' childish wonder appeals to children and adults alike.
A generation since Pee-Wee’s Playhouse last delighted small-fry (and not a few grown-ups) on Saturday-morning TV, the child-man alter ego of comedian Paul Reubens has not grown up. And that delights the theatergoers who lustily cheer Reubens—along with such beloved supporting players as Mailman Mike—in this record of Reubens’s Broadway show. But while his lovingly re-created Playhouse remains a kaleidoscopic refuge of childish wonder, Reubens slyly slips in contemporary satire, satisfying his fans’ jaded outer adults as well as their inner children. Saturday, March 19, at 10 p.m., HBO
