Tip of the week: How to not get sick this winter
Get a flu shot; Fuel up; Stay hydrated; Don’t hibernate
Get a flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends “everyone 6 months and older gets the influenza vaccine.” While it’s ideal to be vaccinated in late fall, “it’s never too late.”
Fuel up. “Diet is the fuel that runs the human machine, including the immune system.” High-quality proteins, such as fish and beans, help build white blood cells, while “brightly colored fruits and veggies provide immune-boosting antioxidants.”
Stay hydrated. Low humidity helps the flu virus spread. Use saline spray for dry nasal passages and use a humidifier at home to keep the humidity at around 50 percent.

Don’t hibernate. A marathon run might “increase your risk of catching seasonal bugs,” but moderate exercise seems to lower the risk of getting a cold.
