Police recover bag of tips left on car roof
Michael May, a part-time bartender in Cleveland, was devastated when he realized that he’d left a pouch containing eight months’ worth of tips—more than $3,600—on the roof of his car before driving off. “What was I going to tell my wife?” May said. Lucky for him, David Hamilton, a volunteer safety “ambassador” for downtown Cleveland, found the bag in the street and took it to the police, who traced it to May through bank receipts. “It’s a miracle,” May said. “It’s great to know there are honest people in the world.”

Less than a month after emerging from his 69-day ordeal trapped in a Chilean mine, Edison Pena this week completed the New York City Marathon in 5 hours, 40 minutes, 51 seconds. About halfway through the race, Pena stopped running due to knee pain and exhaustion, and walked for about 10 miles. Still, he finished. “I came to the U.S. to run this marathon, and I did it,” said Pena. “I struggled with myself. I struggled with my own pain, but I made it.” As he trotted past the finish line, his escorts carried a Chilean flag as Elvis Presley, his favorite singer, blasted from the loudspeakers.
Dispensing with $11 million in four months
In July, Violet and Allen Large of Lower Truro, Nova Scotia, won more than $11 million in a lottery. They have since spent every last penny—none on themselves. “What you’ve never had, you never miss,” said Violet, 78. The couple donated the money to a list of causes that included the local fire department, hospitals, and organizations that fight cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. Violet has been undergoing cancer treatments, which has underscored for the couple the limits of wealth. “That money that we won was nothing,” said Allen, 75. “We have each other.”
