Ottawa’s cool factor

Long known as “the City That Never Wakes,” Canada’s capital seems finally alert to its true potential, said Michael Kaminer in The Washington Post. A “buzzing food scene” and various “proudly indie” neighborhoods have lately lent the compact city an “un-self-conscious cool.” Ottawa’s restaurants could be among “North America’s best-kept secrets”: Canada’s first fine-dining vegan restaurant, ZenKitchen, packs in diners for locally sourced cuisine, while Murray Street, a bistro with a “singular Canuck-vernacular menu,” serves up herb spätzle with shredded mariposa duck confit. The Glebe, a neighborhood that resembles Washington’s Georgetown, bustles with pedestrians attracted by “lefty bookstore” Octopus or the handmade sweets at Café Morala. Even in touristy ByWard Market, Dalhousie Street is as quirky as a “mini Greenwich Village.” Contact: Ottawatourism.ca
