The Princess and the Frog
(Disney, $44.99)
Though it took Disney until 2009 to feature an African-American animated heroine, The Princess and the Frog is a “wondrous creation,” said the Newark, N.J., Star-Ledger. This hand-drawn tale, about a headstrong woman with hopes of opening her own restaurant, transports audiences to a jazzy, 1920s New Orleans.
The Norma Talmadge Collection
A free daily email with the biggest news stories of the day – and the best features from TheWeek.com
(Kino International, $29.95)
Norma Talmadge was “perhaps the biggest female star of the Silent Era”—yet is hardly known today, said The New York Times. This collection partially corrects that by offering two films from her glory years: 1926’s Kiki and 1923’s Within the Law. Not only a fine actress, the spunky Talmadge was “a figure women could identify with.”
