Saving the Globe, and Chrysler’s HQ-to-mall Plan B
Good day for The Boston Globe, Bad day for corporate self-confidence
GOOD DAY FOR: The Boston Globe, after its largest union and its corporate parent, The New York Times Co., agreed to a deal that will apparently keep the printing presses running at New England’s largest newspaper. The Times was threatening to shutter the money-losing paper unless the Boston Newspaper Guild agreed concessions worth $10 million a year plus weakening job security guarantees. The details of the tentative agreement were not released. (The New York Times)
BAD DAY FOR: Corporate self-confidence, as Chrysler’s Auburn Hills sprawling headquarters, built in the early 1990s, was reportedly designed so it could be converted into a shopping mall if the company went out of business. The HQ campus is located in an area that has become one of the most economically depressed in the nation, though, so nobody would be interested in opening a new mall there at the moment.
