Dennis Oppenheim: Cactus Grove
Ace Gallery, Los Angeles
Whatever the art movement, Dennis Oppenheim seems to have been there. He pioneered performance art in the 1970s, later worked in video, and more recently gained fame as a conceptualist sculptor creating enormous and elaborate installations. Now add pop art and high modernism to his influences. The amorphous steel-and-aluminum shapes of Cactus Grove come straight out of a Joan Miró painting, but the primary colors and metal outlines closely resemble Roy Lichtenstein’s late sculptures. Though 10- to 15-feet tall, these whimsical works somehow come across as endearingly modest in scale and ambition. 9430 Wilshire Blvd., through Dec. 31. Prices range from $130,000 to $175,000.
