Bloomberg quits GOP
The week's news at a glance.
New York City
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg this week changed his party registration from Republican to “unaffiliated,” intensifying speculation that he will run for president. Bloomberg, 65, is a billionaire who founded the Bloomberg financial information service. A registered Democrat until he ran for mayor of New York in 2001, he has recently been on a speaking tour around the U.S. sounding very much like a presidential candidate. “The country is really in trouble,” he said in California this week. Bloomberg denies his switch signaled a presidential run, but aides have been suggesting otherwise. No third-party candidate has been elected president in the modern era.
