A U.N. panel this week blamed the Sudanese government for much of the carnage in Darfur. The five-member panel, headed by Nobel laureate and anti-land-mine activist Jody Williams, said Sudan has been backing Arab militias that have killed more than 200,000 people and driven 2.5 million from their homes over the past four years. The panel called for U.N. sanctions and criminal prosecution of Sudanese officials. Sudan responded that the U.N.’s Human Rights Council should throw out the panel’s report because none of the team members even visited Darfur. Williams, an American, said Sudan refused to grant them visas.
