Farrakhans farewell
The week's news at a glance.
Detroit
Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan used his last major address as head of the controversial group to call for the impeachment of George Bush and to urge Muslims and Christians to stop killing each other. Farrakhan, who has been fighting prostate cancer for years, spoke for two hours at the organization’s annual convention in Detroit. In the past, Farrakhan has denounced “white devils” and Jewish “bloodsuckers,” but he used this speech to appeal for religious harmony. He reserved his sharpest words for the “war-like” Bush, whom he accused of “lying to America.” Farrakhan, 73, has not yet named a successor, leaving the direction of the Nation of Islam in doubt.
