Rich kid convicted
The week's news at a glance.
Delhi
A high-profile murder case came to a sensational end this week, when the son of a wealthy politician was convicted of murdering a bartender who had refused to serve him a drink. Manu Sharma, 29, son of a former federal minister, shot bartender and aspiring model Jessica Lall in full view of high-society guests, and even police officers, at a fancy private party in 1999. The charges were initially dropped when witnesses refused to come forward. But prosecutors reopened their investigation after TV stations and newspapers made the case into a caste issue, accusing the police of colluding with the rich.
