Ugandan warlord emerges

The week's news at a glance.

Ri-Kwangba, Sudan

Infamous Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, a notorious recluse, emerged from hiding this week, but only to register a complaint with a U.N. official. Kony, a self-proclaimed messiah who heads the Lord's Resistance Army, rarely leaves his bush stronghold for fear he will be arrested for war crimes. During the 20 years he's been fighting Ugandan forces, Kony has been charged with cannibalism, torture, and enslaving women and children. This week, he kept Jan Egeland, the U.N.'s top humanitarian official, waiting for hours at their rendezvous in southern Sudan, set up so Egeland could negotiate the release of slaves. But when Kony finally showed up, he denied holding any captives and demanded that Egeland tell the Ugandan army to stop harassing him.
