A fatal border chase
The week's news at a glance.
Yuma, Ariz.
Nine people were killed and 13 injured this week when an SUV ferrying Mexicans into the U.S. flipped as it was being chased by border guards. The Chevrolet Suburban, carrying 22 people, was attempting to drive around a border checkpoint near Yuma, when it was spotted by U.S. Border Patrol officers. The patrol gave chase, as the SUV made a U-turn and sped back toward Mexico. When the driver swerved to avoid spikes designed to flatten car tires, the vehicle overturned, killing five passengers instantly. Four others died later at a nearby hospital. The Border Patrol says it will investigate the incident.
