Ruins unsafe
The week's news at a glance.
Santorini, Greece
A British tourist was killed this week when an exhibit at an ancient Greek ruin caved in on him. Richard Binnion, 45, was crushed to death when a metal canopy protecting the 3,700-year-old ruin of Akrotiri gave way. Greek officials immediately closed the site, a Bronze Age settlement with multi-story, elaborately muraled buildings and sophisticated drainage systems. The ancient structure itself held up fine; the part that collapsed was built in 2000.
