Alexandria, Va.
A 5-week-old girl born to a brain-dead Virginia woman died in surgery this week in a heartbreaking end to a story that inspired sympathy around the world. Her mother, Susan Torres, collapsed early in the pregnancy from a stroke caused by melanoma, but was kept on a ventilator for nearly three months to give the baby a chance. Susan Anne Catherine Torres was born two months premature, weighing 1 pound, 13 ounces. Her mother was taken off life support and died. Letters and donations poured in from as far away as Pakistan. “After the efforts of this summer to bring her into the world,” said the baby’s uncle, Justin Torres, “this is obviously a devastating loss.”
