Tribe revolts
The week's news at a glance.
Dera Bugti, Pakistan
A long-simmering tribal revolt in Baluchistan, Pakistan’s poorest province, erupted last week with an attack on government forces near a gas field. Forty-five people were killed. Bugti tribesmen have long demanded a greater share of profits from natural gas extracted from their land. But they were rarely violent until two months ago, when a Bugti doctor was reportedly raped by a government soldier. Since then, Bugti fighters have been bombing and sabotaging railway and power stations. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz appealed to Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, head of the Bugti tribe, to negotiate.
