Another shoe bomber
The week's news at a glance.
London
The U.S. government this week indicted a British man as an accomplice to shoe bomber Richard Reid. Attorney General John Ashcroft said U.S. officials would seek the extradition of Saajid Badat to face “American justice.” Badat, 25, is already in prison in Britain on charges of conspiring with Reid to bring down airplanes by detonating explosives hidden in their shoes. Reid’s attack, in 2001, was foiled by airline passengers who saw him trying to light his shoe with a match; he is now serving life in a U.S. prison. Badat, who had close contact with Reid in Britain, was arrested last year after a raid on his home turned up similar explosives. Extradition will probably be delayed until after Badat’s British trial, scheduled for next February.
