Diana monument closed
The week's news at a glance.
London
The fountain memorializing Diana, Princess of Wales, has been shut down, just weeks after it opened. The Hyde Park fountain, created by American architect Kathryn Gustafson, is a large granite oval containing a series of pools and waterfalls. It was designed to be accessible to the public, especially children. But with tourists flocking to the monument at a rate of 5,000 an hour, it quickly filled up with trash, and the granite surface sprouted slimy green algae that caused several splashing kids to slip and hurt themselves. The Culture Ministry said the fountain would reopen after the government figured out a way to regulate access.
