U.S. pullout

Seoul

The U.S. said this week that it would cut far more troops from South Korea than it had earlier announced. Some 12,500 troops from the 37,000-strong force will be redeployed as part of a wider effort to reposition American forces around the globe, U.S. officials said. South Korean lawmakers were already upset at the news last month that 3,600 U.S. troops were being reassigned to Iraq. Many blamed the government of President Roh Moo-hyun for allowing anti-American sentiment to flourish in South Korea. On the street, the news was welcomed with a few small demonstrations against the American troop presence.
