Troops storm refugee camp
The week's news at a glance.
Gaza
The Israeli military moved helicopters, tanks, and infantry into a Gaza refugee camp this week, in a major offensive to clear out armed militants. At least 19 people were killed and hundreds made homeless as tanks demolished scores of Palestinian houses along the Egyptian border. Palestinian terror groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad frequently smuggle weapons and explosives from Egypt in tunnels that surface in ordinary homes, and Israel has long had a controversial policy of destroying those buildings. But this week’s bulldozing brought an unusual U.S. rebuke. “We oppose the destruction of homes,” said Secretary of State Colin Powell. “We don’t think that’s productive.”
