Plot to bomb NATO summit
The week's news at a glance.
Istanbul
Turkish police this week arrested 16 suspected Islamic extremists who they said were planning to attack the NATO summit meeting in Istanbul next month. The men, alleged members of the al Qaida–linked Kurdish group Ansar al-Islam, had explosives, bomb blueprints, and thousands of compact discs with training instructions from Osama bin Laden. Istanbul Gov. Muammer Guler said that the police raid, more than a year in the planning, had wiped out the terror cell and that the summit would be secure. “There is no reason for concern,” he said. Some 50 world leaders are scheduled to attend the meeting, including George Bush and Tony Blair.
