Mysterious plane crash
The week's news at a glance.
Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt
A charter jet crashed into the Red Sea last week shortly after takeoff, killing all 148 people on board. Most of the passengers were French tourists leaving an Egyptian beach resort. Egyptian officials quickly said there was no sign of terrorism and blamed the crash on mechanical difficulties. The plane, an 11-year-old Boeing 737, recently passed a French safety test, but the airline, Egypt’s Flash Air, has been cited for safety violations in other countries. At least two minor Islamic militant groups have claimed responsibility for the crash, but Western intelligence officials do not deem those claims credible.
