Suu Kyi okay

Rangoon
A Red Cross official met with Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi this week for the first time since she was arrested in late May. Michel Ducreaux met with Suu Kyi alone for half an hour at the undisclosed location where she is being held. “She was in very good health and she wasn’t hurt at all,” Ducreaux said. “She was in high spirits.” The 58-year-old Nobel Peace laureate, who won an election in 1998 but was not allowed to take power, was arrested after a violent clash between her followers and supporters of the ruling military junta. The U.S. has imposed tough trade sanctions on Burma because of Suu Kyi’s imprisonment, and Japan has cut off aid.
