Suicide bombings return
The week's news at a glance.
Tel Aviv
Two Palestinian suicide bombers killed 25 people in an immigrant neighborhood of Tel Aviv last week, marking the return of terrorism after six weeks of relative calm. More than 100 people—mostly non-Jewish workers from Russia, the Philippines, Latin America, and Africa—were maimed by the bombs, which were packed with nails and shrapnel. Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, a branch of Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement, claimed responsibility. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon denounced the “Palestinian leadership that continues to support, fund, and initiate terror” and ordered a renewed crackdown in the occupied territories. Palestinian Authority officials said the crackdown was killing civilians and inspiring further violence.
