Iraqis being watched

The week's news at a glance.

Washington, D.C.

The Bush administration is tracking thousands of Iraqi citizens in the U.S. to make sure they won’t pose a threat in the event of war, The New York Times reported this week. The government did the same thing during the Persian Gulf War, when FBI and immigration officials questioned and investigated many travelers from the region. The new operation is broader. It includes electronic surveillance to nab terrorists who sympathize with Baghdad before they strike. “We think we know who most of the bad guys are,” said one administration official, “but we are going to be very proactive here and not take any chances.”
